Review > Abracadabra - German Humour Goes Global
HERR Wehn and Herr Kuhnle are back, and world domination is their aim – through humour. The audience I was among surrendered about two minutes into a show that is so good-naturedly funny that resistance is futile.
The clever pincer movement of studiedly Teutonic stand-up from Herr Wehn (plus mind-reading, puppetry and pathos) and physical and musical comedy gold from the multitalented Herr Kuhnle grips us where we giggle and doesn’t let go for an hour.
Wehn takes it to the comedy edge with material about the McCanns, Liverpudlians and even Jews (a subject which has Herr Kuhnle quietly yodelling – it’s what he does when he is nervous). Herr Kuhnle delights with displays of flag-waving; oompah with Australian overtones; broom dancing and aerial ballet.
He plays the ukulele, the Siemens vacuum cleaner, the bagpipes (strictly speaking the chanter, but it’s still a moment of comic brilliance and international fusion) and the leaf blower. The man is a comic genius. His interpretation of La Bamba makes you forget Ritchie Valens ever existed and his Habanera combines the predatory allure of Maria Callas with the vocal pyrotechnics of Florence Foster Jenkins.
I was delighted to see the gnomes back centre-stage where they belong, and their special guest Die Wunderbare Helga is a thrill – she must be one of the few women on the planet who can conduct an orchestra of cowbells while yodelling upside down.
For anyone who has not seen these gentlemen before please regard this review as a big “Achtung!” and get along to a tiny piece of Germany in Scotland. Wirklich wunderbar.
