Dance review: Pearlesque
Edinburgh Festival Fringe Scotsman review: Pearlesque at New Town Theatre (Venue 7), reviewed by David Pollock
It perhaps wasn’t a night to experience this self-proclaimed burlesque review show at its best, given that the opening night’s smoke effects triggered a fire alarm which caused the building to be evacuated, but the fare up until that point and following our re-admittance hadn’t been inspiring.
The eight scantily-dressed dancers in the troupe are all bright and capable, but none offer anything spectacular, while glibly naughty set-pieces involving only two or three performers set to the Pink Panther theme or a lounge version of Beyoncé’s Crazy in Love get lost on the large stage. Only at the end when they all dance in formation does the show’s potential start to be realised.
Until 25 August. Today 8:05pm
