Theatre review: A Family Beyond the Army
Edinburgh Festival Fringe Scotsman review: A Family Beyond the Army at Sweet Grassmarket (Venue 18), reviewed by David Pollock
This issue-based play in aid of charities supporting returned soldiers and their families has its heart in the right place and a convincing degree of empathy with its subjects.
All five performances are strong, particularly earthy mother Gerry Fleming, Paul Innes as the Scots squaddie and Mai Cunningham as the wife.
Yet odd decisions, including the slowed-down pacing of the speech, and dialogue which addresses the audience and not other characters, break the flow of the play.
Until 25 August. Today 4pm
