Theatre review: Nehru – His Inner Story
Edinburgh Festival Fringe Scotsman review: Nehru: His Inner Story at Paradise in the Vaults (Venue 29), reviewed by Matt Trueman
Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, carried Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy into a newly independent India.
Pramila Le Hunte’s biographical play shows him struggling to bear the burden of his mentor, but it is almost entirely adulatory.
As such, it assumes a level of knowledge about Indian history, which makes it a confusing affair in this context, not least because it has been cut by half an hour to fit its festival timeslot.
In the end, it takes a heroic and authoritative performance from Dilip Shankar to keep this play from falling apart.
Until 25 August. Tomorrow 7:15pm
