Musical review: Gobsmell: The Musical
Edinburgh Fringe Scotsman review: Gobsmell: The Musical at theSpace on Niddry Street (Venue 9), reviewed by Fiona Shepherd
An American dentist is lured to the last NHS practice in West Yorkshire and finds himself up against a problem patient and a smarmy businessman in this kitchen sink musical which takes a welcome turn towards Spaghetti Western melodrama in the closing moments, with a dental-drills-at-dawn showdown.
Gobsmell has its charming moments, and great performances, but these are offset by wobbly singing, obvious culture clash jokes and a pretty pathetic rom-com subplot. There is, however, complimentary toothpaste.
