Theatre review: Small Steps in Random Directions
Edinburgh Festival Fringe Scotsman review: Small Steps in Random Directions at Just the Tonic at The Caves (Venue 88), reviewed by Fiona Shepherd
Life’s a bitch and there is not much you can do about it appears to be the message of this show, which comprises a brisk sequence of curt, often tetchy back-and-forth exchanges between stressed, bored or nonplussed individuals. Random is certainly the word, but connections and references to previous scenes eventually emerge. Also, it rains a lot.
I did enjoy the vicars at the bus stop discussing the mundane particulars of end-of-life pastoral care, but all this banality only leads to a pessimistic song-and-dance routine at the end. How underwhelming – but maybe that’s the point.
